When I visit any new city my first impression is formed on the width of the roads, cleanliness of the roads, order on the roads and only later I view the buildings, hotels, restaurants, services and still later people.
I have always wondered how Ahmedabad would have looked to me had I not been a resident here since birth and had paid my first visit to the city. It is difficult to disassociate from the familiarity of years of residence and imagine with eyes closed and inner eye open and start to visualise.
Here I arrive at the Ahmedabad station. It is one impression. I arrive at the airport. It is another impression. And what is my impression?
The roads are reasonably wide and get wider as I move westword to the newAhmedabad. The roads are well not very clean and get dirtier as I move westword.
The buildings-some very nice some very hideous. Some atleast outstanding.
People friendly but all the time rushing unmindful of others on the road.
But more about this later.
However, the first thing Municipal Corporation aught to do is to keep the roads very clean. That is the first impression of a new comer. Cleanliness must get topmost priority above everything else. I will go to River Front or Kankaria only later. I am on the road in front of station/ airport/hotel first.
Is this such a tall order?
Believe me, people being what they are, they are going to litter the streets. Education, road manners, ettiquette will take generation if not generations atleast in a democracy.
So, we have to devise ways to keep city clean accepting the way people are going to behave.
Let us not wait until people improve.
